Can a Car Title Be Notarized Online?

Document-specific RON guidance, with state-law and recipient caveats.

Short answer: It depends heavily on the stateDepends

Vehicle-title rules are controlled by motor-vehicle agencies and state law, and the transfer process is not uniform nationwide. Some transactions use notarization, some use electronic title-transfer systems, and some require an office visit or additional documents.

Start with the title agency, not just the notary law

A state's RON law answers whether a notarial act can be performed remotely. It does not automatically answer whether a motor-vehicle agency will accept that method for your particular title transfer.

Before booking a remote notary, check the DMV/MVD requirements for the state that issued the title and the type of transfer you are completing.

Some title transfers are already electronic

Arizona illustrates why “Do I need an online notary?” is sometimes the wrong first question. Arizona MVD offers an eTitle Transfer process for eligible private-party transfers. For qualifying transactions, the buyer and seller can complete the transfer through the state's electronic system rather than using a paper title and a separate notarial process.

Arizona also notes that transactions involving powers of attorney, divorce decrees, or other legal documents may require an office visit. Other states use different systems, so verify the issuing state's instructions.

What to check before using RON for a title

  1. Which state issued the title?
  2. Is this a sale, gift, inheritance, lien release, duplicate title, or another type of transfer?
  3. Does the DMV/MVD form actually call for notarization?
  4. Does the agency accept an electronically notarized record for this transaction?
  5. Does the original paper title need to be surrendered?

What if a power of attorney is being used?

Vehicle transactions completed by an agent can introduce separate POA requirements. Read our online POA guide and confirm the title agency's form and original-document requirements before signing anything.

If my state allows RON, will the DMV accept an online-notarized title?

Not automatically. RON authority and motor-vehicle transfer acceptance are separate questions. Check the issuing state's title instructions and the exact form or transaction.

Can I transfer a title completely online?

Some states offer electronic title-transfer services for eligible transactions. Eligibility can depend on the title state, vehicle type, liens, number of owners, residency, and other factors.

Should I sign the title before the notary session?

Do not assume you should pre-sign. Follow the title agency's instructions and the notary's directions so the signature and notarial certificate are completed correctly.

General information only, not legal advice. A notary can verify identity and perform a notarial act; the notary does not determine whether your document is legally sufficient for its intended purpose.
