Can This Document Be Notarized Online?
RON eligibility depends on both the state and the document. Start with the document guide, then confirm your state's current rules.

RON FAQ →The two checks that matter
- Does the relevant state permit the required remote notarial act? Use our 50-State + D.C. Guide.
- Does the document and recipient allow this method? Witnesses, original-document rules, filing systems, recording offices, title agencies, courts, banks, and other recipients can impose additional requirements.
Why a document guide is useful
NASS notes that documents commonly requiring notarization include affidavits, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, wills, and real-estate documents. But RON procedures are established state by state, so a broad “online notary is legal” answer can miss document-specific restrictions.
Online notary services
If your document and situation are eligible for RON, these are the services featured on OnlineNotaryCheck.
Provider availability does not override state law, document requirements, witness rules, recording rules, or a recipient's acceptance requirements.
Can every notarized document be notarized online?
No. A state can authorize RON while excluding particular documents, witness arrangements, or transaction types. Recipient requirements also matter.
Is online notarization the same as electronic signing?
No. Electronic signing is the use of an electronic signature. Online notarization adds a commissioned notary, identity verification, a notarial act, and the state's required remote procedures.
What should I check first?
Check the document type, the relevant state's RON status, any witness or recording requirements, and whether the organization receiving the document accepts the resulting record.
